I think potentially Paul you have a great image here, but there are a few things i think you could work on to really give it a boost. Firstly the background is quite patchy and you can see where you've not quite gone right upto the flower with the black, also the black has seeped in places on the flower. I think if you fixed the patchy background, got rid of the black that has seeped onto the flower and gave the black a boost and then upped the saturation to bring out the lovely colours, it would be a beautiful image. Sorry to be so negative, but i do think you have a great image if you put in a little more work

Hi Gel
There are NO negatives comments about anyones shots! Alll suggestions are possible improvements.
However, I will say that digital shots are not the true shot! Digital imaging is something that we are all guilty of!
Orchids are ridiculaously difficult to capture with the very fine nature of there colours and hues, focus being the most impossible.
Please keep the comments coming, it is the only way we all learn!

I'm not sure what you mean by digital images not being a true shot Paul, as opposed to what? An image on film? Both are captured in the same way and each can be manipulated in the same way, only the storage medium is different.
I think Gel's observations were spot on, the background has been replaced and it could have been done with more care. You mention the focus being impossible but you seem to have nailed it on the most important part of the flower, however, checking the EXIF data, using an aperture of only F5.6 at a long focal length (120mm) will only give you a limited depth of field which then puts the rest of the flower out of focus.
Flower photography is not just about colour, colour is easily controlled, adjusted or augmented in post processing (example) but for me, the most important thing I look for is texture. Flower petals have the most wonderful textures and if you want to show off the delicate colours and intricate details of a flower such as an orchid, you need to be able to capture its texture. This all comes down to how the flower is lit, if you get the lighting right, then the rest follows easily.
Another example, no colour, all texture
